CEDAC Exports more Organic Rice to the United States

From January to March, 2013, SAHAKREAS CEDAC shipped 6 containers of organic rice or equal to 114 tons, with BCS certified quality to the United States. 59 tons are organic jasmine brown rice and the remaining 55 tons are organic jasmine white rice, exported to the American market under the names Organic Brown Mekong Flower Rice and Organic Mekong Flower Rice.

Through this export, 800 certified organic rice producers in Takeo, Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces who were already certified the quality with more than 6,200 family members benefited from the trade.

The CEDAC Organic Rice Market Program started in 2004 with the opening of the first CEDAC Shop in Phnom Penh. The rice, sold under the brand name ‘Natural Agricultural Products,’ or NAP for short, quickly became popular at the CEDAC shops as well as in supermarkets and restaurants in Phnom Penh. The consumers trust CEDAC’s organic control system to assure the best quality.

Every year, CEDAC’s Internal Control System is certified by the accredited certification body BCS Öko Garantie GmbH. Moreover, since 2010, CEDAC rice has also been certified with the FairTSA Standard, which assures fair production and working conditions, higher prices plus a fair trade premium for community development.
“The Vision of CEDAC,” according to CEDAC President Dr. Yang Saing Koma, “is to transform subsistence rice farmers into organic rice farm entrepreneurs or commercial organic fragrant rice producers. Through the Fair trade standard, we can generate extra funds for social development through the business with our international partners.”

By 2022, CEDAC plans to support up to 100,000 farmers to produce more than 400,000 tons organic fragrant paddy to supply the markets.

This year, 700 additional farmers are preparing for international certification, during which the farmers must prove that they can manage their farms without any chemical inputs for at least 3 years.
