Mission of Mr. Fukushima to HMB 5 in Kampong Thom and Kratie provinces

From March 10-21, 2013, Mr. Yashihiro Fukushima, a private donor to the CEDAC project “Happy Mountain Bird” phase 5 (HMB5), visited two of the six projects provinces where the project is being implemented, including Kampong Thom, Prahvihea, Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri province. The objectives of the visit was to launch the project in each province and build the capacity of project staff members for selecting target farmer families, project promoters and conducting baseline survey.

During the visit, Mr. Fukushima, together with CEDAC President, Dr. Yang Saing Koma presented about the overview and the objectives of the project to staff members. Moreover, staff members and donors visited the villages to practice and teach the staff on how to select target farmer families and project promoters. After each field visit, all staff members were asked to reflect on lesson learned and problems solving.

As a result, the project staff members gained a better understanding of the project, especially how to select project promoters and target farmers.

To date, the HMB project. funded by Mr. Yashihiro Fukushima, has supported 28,140 poor families, sending a total of 41,796 children to attend school regularly in Kampong Chhnang, Takeo, Prey Veng and Kampong Speu provinces. These families have improved their livelihoods and also gained knowledge of ecological agriculture.

For the next 21 months (February 01, 2013 – October 31, 2014), the Happy Mountain Bird phase 5 (HMB5) will work with 1,000 villages in Kampong Thom, Prahvihea Kratie, Stueng Treng, Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri provinces. Around 30,000 children (or 30 children per village), between the ages of 6 to 11 from these targeted villages will attend school through the project.
